‘One Punch Man’ Is Bound to Fail Despite Season 3 Hype Because of Fans’ Unrealistic Expectations

One Punch Man is gearing up to return with its third season. The anime had a steller first season, which raised the expectations massively for the second one, leading to mass disappointment among the fans.

The biggest problem One Punch Man Season 3 will face this time sn’t its production—it’s the fans themselves. Since JC Staff (the studio that messed up season 2) is the one taking up the task this time as well, there was some doubt as to how it would shape up.

But after many breaks and extensions, it seems like JC Staff is giving it their best to produce Season 3. The question is, will it be enough?

JC Staff has a tough road ahead

One Punch Man has a unique story and is a satirical spin on the plot armor that we see in the Shonen series protagonists. With emotional growth instead of powers and the way each enemy is defeated in a single punch, the anime becomes very streamlined.

The main things to focus on and highlight are, of course, the fight scenes, although when the protagonist, Saitama (who went bald from training too much), shows up for a fight, we know it is going to end in a single punch.

But the build-up that happens over an episode (sometimes even more) requires good animation. The fight visuals need to be done right, as they are the core, other than that, the narrative balance and a faithful adaptation will lead to good results. Usually, that is.

This means excellent fight scenes and good visuals and animation. But will it be enough? With the fans pursuing perfection, it will be hard to tell whether Season 3 can stand up to the hype.

The unrealistic expectations of the fans

With Season 1 setting an unbelievably high standard with Madhouse’s stellar animation and dynamic fight sequences, not to mention the all-star ensemble cast, whatever JC Staff does is bound to not satisfy the unrealistic expectations the fans have.

It cannot be said to be a fault on the fans’ part either, as after the disappointment that Season 2 was and all the breaks JC Staff took, the only thing fans have to compare Season 3 is Madhouse’s Season 1. Now, JC Staff is in a difficult spot as it looks like a no-win on both sides.

If they do it well, they will not be able to compare to Madhouse’s Season 1 (no all-star cast, and the manga quality drops after the Monster Association arc). If they do not, they will be vilified and forever marked as repeat failures.

While many are excited about the Monster Association arc’s adaptation (and the fight with Garou), the arc itself has many flaws. The pacing is uneven, and the series loses its charm as the fights drag on, leading to the fun parts seeming boring and cumbersome.

Not to mention, One Punch Man has a lot of retcons, and the constant rewrites in the manga have left fans confused about what exactly is happening in the story. So, Season 3 of One Punch Man is bound to fall short of the fans’ expectations.
