Nolan Gould masterfully played the role of Luke in Modern Family for over a decade. As such, fans practically got to see him grow up in the show. While this should have pleased the fans all the more and made him a fan-favorite character, fate wasn’t by Gould’s side.
Unfortunately, instead of growing up to be a goofy, yet respectful teen, he turned into a horribly misogynistic character very quickly. Fans obviously had a hard time coping with that sudden shift from that mischievous little boy.
Interestingly, though, for all the hate Luke gets for these reasons, Sarah Hyland’s Haley got away with similar traits with almost no such consequences from Modern Family fans.
Sarah Hyland’s Haley got a free pass even after being just as bad as Luke in Modern Family
Modern Family told the story of three interconnected families, the Pritchetts, the Delagados, and the Dunphys. Now with families obviously a hoard of kids also dominated the cast members from the get-go.
Such a character has been Luke Dunphy, played by Nolan Gould. Although he was first introduced as a ten year old mischievous, and goofy, yet warmhearted kid, his character soon turned into a misogynistic teenager.
From deplorable comments on the girls around him, to two-timing, and being in general disrespectful to women, he went from one of the most beloved characters to one of the most hated ones.
Well, to be fair, no one could blame fans for that take, but Nolan Gould still deserves a huge credit for portraying his character so faithfully as to turn his fans into his haters so fast. Incidentally, Luke was by no means the only character who portrayed such behavior in Modern Family.
However, what is interesting, is that he was the only one to receive fans’ hatred to such a degree. Meanwhile, Sarah Hyland‘s character, Haley Dunphy who portrayed pretty similar traits as the stereotypical party princess, with her eyes locked on boys rather than textbooks was fascinatingly given free passes over her bad behavior.
The revelation of her cheating on her boyfriend rightfully received strong protests from the fandom. Especially as at that point she basically threw away all the character development she had had up until that point.
However, that too, ended up getting overshadowed when she became a mother and had to shift everything around her life to make space for the upcoming changes.
Objectively, Haley’s character arc almost ended exactly the way it started in Modern Family, when even Luke matured for the better by the end of it. As such, this double standard in the treatment of both characters in the majority of the fandom has disappointed many people.

Modern Family became a groundbreaking sitcom that continues to attract new fans even now after years of its conclusion. As such, the series providing the audience with some of their favorite characters is a given.
At the same time, the writers ended up turning two major characters of the show, i.e., Luke and Haley, into two most hated characters over the years.
While fans hating what the writers did to their characters isn’t surprising, only one of them facing the majority of the fandom’s judgment is disheartening. Interestingly, it seems like many netizens agree with that sentiment after they had gotten time to analyze the show for years.

Luke Dunphy being bashed by the fandom is more than justified. However, the love fans seem to have for Nolan Gould is equally important to highlight.
Especially since he had to go through several difficulties on set during the filming of Modern Family. In any case, fans applaud him for his phenomenal performance, and can’t wait to see him in more projects soon.
