Netflix’s pattern of canceling shows brimming with potential needs to be studied by experts. They leave their fanbases hanging for years and the only hope for any closure is the small chance another network will pick it up. Mindhunter, The Society, and Sense8 are only a few that come to mind.
The one show that got canceled which stings the most, however, is Anne with an E. The Canadian period drama had a special place in many people’s hearts. It’s a brilliant coming-of-age story with a refreshingly optimistic and creative protagonist.

In late 2019, Netflix and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) announced that Anne with an E would not return for a fourth season. Although it’s been 5 years since its cancelation, fans who loved the show aren’t over it.
All hope might not be lost, however. An upcoming anime titled Anne Shirley, created by The Answer Studio and directed by Hiroshi Kawamata will be out this April. Both Anne with an E and Anne Shirley are based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novel, Anne of Green Gables.
Anne with an E’s cancelation was tragic, but the world of anime is here for you
The series wasn’t unpopular nor was it receiving negative reviews. The negotiations between Netflix and CBC fell through. The latter wanted to focus on their streaming service and less on their existing collaboration. This caused Anne with an E to get canceled in the process.

Fans of the series were devastated by the news. It was a more nuanced and complex take on the classic Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. The performances and the storyline captured their hearts.
On Instagram, the user, @sachikofairy, talked about how much she still misses Anne with an E but also made the new anime known to her audience. She compares the art style to that of Studio Ghibli.
Her audience commented on how much they missed the show.
I’ll never understand why Netflix canceled such an amazing show.

What fans don’t know, however, is that there was an official Studio Ghibli anime, Anne of Green Gables, released in 1979. Directed by Isao Takahata, who directed Grave of the Fireflies, it has 50 episodes of heart-warming content.
Is the new anime Anne Shirley really “Studio Ghibli” style?
Anne of Green Gables was the true classic Studio Ghibli style. The Answer Studio might be visually interesting and vibrant, but it doesn’t replicate the style.
So if you’re still mourning the cancelation of Anne with an E, the 1979 Studio Ghibli anime is here for you. April isn’t far, but you don’t have to wait to watch 50 episodes of Isao Takahata’s brilliance.
In 2009, there was an anime that also served as a prequel for the Studio Ghibli series. Konnichiwa Anne: Before Green Gables talks about her early life.
There have been several variations of Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables. It became a popular novel in Japan as it was only translated in 1952 by Hanako Muraoka. It resonated with several orphaned people in World War 2. The new anime will be worth the watch and will be released in April.
Anne with an E is available on Netflix.
