Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel reveals plans for major career change as he says ‘I want to try a bit of everything’

KASPER SCHMEICHEL’S short term future is sealed with the goalkeeper to continue with Celtic next season.

But he already has an idea of what’s ahead once his playing career comes to an end.

Schmeichel, 38, joined Celtic on a free transfer from Anderlecht last summer.

After signing an initial one-year contract, the Denmark No1 has already penned an extension that will see him stay with the Hoops for next season.

Come the end of the 2025/26 campaign, Schmeichel will just be six months off his 40th birthday.

But by no means is the former Leicester and Manchester City stopper considering retirement.

Appearing on The Overlap, the Premier League winner insisted he still hasn’t even thought about calling it quits.

Schmeichel said: “I’ve never thought in limitations.

“No (I haven’t thought about retirement yet). I’ve never been he kind of guy to think in limitations.

“If I was thinking limitations I’d live into the whole living in the shadow of someone and maybe not achieving things I want to achieve.

“I’ve always lived in the thought that anything is possible. I’ve also been lucky in the sense that I’ve had a dad who’s gone through this.

“Is there a better job out there than being a footballer? No.

“While I’m physically able, I know there’s not something better waiting for me right now.

“But what I do now is appreciate it more than ever.”

As mentioned, Schmeichel has already extended his contract to stay with Celtic throughout the next season.

Despite his lengthy career – one that’s included playing at the very top level – Schmeichel insists playing for Celtic has been a whole new challenge for him.

He continued: “I’ve got another year after this. When you get to that age you play it by ear and not taking anything for granted. An injury could finish it all.

“I love football, I’ve always loved football. The opportunity of going to Celtic was a unique one for me. You’ve played for clubs who expected to win, I’ve never really played for those clubs where it’s expected.

“Going to Celtic now, that pressure that if you don’t win, if you draw it’s a catastrophe. It’s elevated my game, it’s not just about winning, it’s about being perfect.

“Every action I do now, every bit of handling has to be perfect. It’s not just about winning.

“Now there’s different things that motivate me, now it’s about winning and winning well and how much we can win.”

While Schmeichel is very much zoned in on his playing career, he DOES have an idea on what he’d like to do after.

Revealing his plans, the goalkeeper has an eye on TWO potential career paths once his gloves are put away for the last time.

Gary Neville asked Schmeichel: “Pundit or coach?”

The Hoops goalie said: “Both, I think. I think I’d try both. I’m doing my badges and the actual coaching element on the pitch, I love. I love that part, that’s really enjoyable.

“I enjoy doing things like this as well. I think just kind of see.”

He continued: “I don’t know. I think you want to just try and do a bit of everything.

“I don’t know what will be the future. Right now, I want to stay in the now. I don’t want to look too far ahead.

“I know the type of person I am, I’ll be sitting in 10 years time and thinking ‘why didn’t I just enjoy it a bit more?’”
