6 Things We Know About Superman’s Test Screenings: James Gunn Has Some Surprise Villains for DC Fans

Everyone’s excitement for James Gunn’s Superman starring David Corenswet will get even more intense after an insider revealed some interesting details about the upcoming film. The result of the initial test screening proved that it needed more polishing, but in the most recent viewing, the movie reportedly did better than the last time.

This already sounds optimistic since Superman is expected to be the biggest project yet from the revamped DC Universe. The official teaser trailer generally yielded positive reactions, especially after it moved away from the dark and brooding version of the previous iteration.

Upcoming Superman film reportedly promises surprise villains

A popular Portuguese fan site DC da Depressão shared on X, formerly Twitter, some tidbits of what fans can expect in the upcoming Superman film (via DCU Hype). First off, Nicholas Hoult reportedly delivered a great performance as Lex Luthor. Given his acting credits, we sort of already know he’s going to be great. It’s also revealed that the CGI in the movie is so much better and has a higher quality than what we’ve seen in the trailer.

Another important detail the scooper revealed is that we’re getting unexpected villains showing up on the screen. The movie is stacked with other popular superheroes apart from Superman, so it only makes sense to have more antagonists as well.

We’re seeing Rachel Brosnahan’s portrayal of Lois Lane for the first time, and her character is reportedly “funny and adorable.” James Gunn has promised fans that the movie will be lighthearted, and there’s a rumor as well that it’s going to have balanced comedic and emotional moments.

Finally, Superman is said to radiate the same tone as the first Wonder Woman movie and the first installment in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. One more thing that the site revealed is that David Corenswet’s take on the famed Last Son of Krypton is reminiscent of Brandon Routh’s version.

Film critic John Campea also said in his podcast, “I’ve heard it’s tremendously good,” pertaining to the upcoming movie amid conflicting opinions. It’s important for fans to take all of these with a grain of salt. After all, there might still be changes made at the last minute before the film hits theatres in a couple of months, so nothing is final until we’ve seen it on the big screen.

If there are positive reviews, there are also not-so-great reactions from critics, as revealed by veteran scooper Jeff Sneider. In The Hot Mic podcast, he stated that he received a call from his best source saying, “Great newsletter tonight. You got one thing wrong. And that’s about Superman, which I continue to hear, is terrible.”

At this point, we’re not sure how the movie will fare at the box office, but given the sky-high anticipation of fans, we can assume it’s going to draw a lot of attention from the general audience.

Superman hits theaters on July 11, 2025.
