If you are planning on going to any of the local lakes , it is required that you carry a boater card now in order to operate your boat. It went into effect January 2025.
First you pay $10.00 for your application fee and then once you get your ID number, you can take the test for free on the boat us foundation .org website. You can choose any boaters course, this one is the free one. You can donate $20.00 to the Application fee of $10.00 if you want to, if not just uncheck the $20.00 and just pay the $10.00. Here are the links. It takes 6 hours to do the 6 courses, (you can do it when you want, just hit save at the bottom of the course.) Then you will take a 50 question test and then a 10 question test after that. You print out your boat card on paper and within 60 days they will send you your boaters license in the mail. The paper is good for 90 days. Any questions I will try and help.

California law exempts people who rent a boat from needing a Boater Card.
