Something Better Than Marvel Rivals is Coming and You Can Thank Avengers: Endgame Directors For That

Marvel Rivals has changed the live service genre and given Marvel fans something to celebrate and enjoy. But for all its greatness, it is still a live service game. And as such, it doesn’t focus on story, cinematics or character growth. But worry not, because our favorite Avengers directors might save us.

The Russo Brothers have expressed interest in developing video games tied to Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Given their history with Marvel Studios, if they bring the same level of care and ambition to a Marvel game, we could be looking at one of the greatest games ever.

Marvel Rivals is big, but we can go even bigger

Joe and Anthony Russo have already made their mark on Hollywood, directing some of our favorite, and the most successful Marvel films of all time. And it seems like they aren’t shying away from dabbling in the gaming industry. Speaking to Variety, Joe Russo recently stated that they “would definitely be open” to creating video games based on their upcoming Avengers films.

As Marvel fans, we’ve waited a long time for a proper Avengers game after the disappointing release of Crystal Dynamics Marvel’s Avengers. Insomniac’s Spider-Man games and Eidos-Montréal’s Guardians of the Galaxy game are great games, but we haven’t gotten an Avengers level of scale in recent Marvel games. The Russo brothers took Marvel to new heights with the MCU, and we hope to see the same if they ever commit to making these games.

But what does count as a good Marvel game? Well, aside from the titles just mentioned, we’ve recently seen the success of NetEase Games’ Marvel Rivals. Currently, Marvel Rivals is one of the few bright spots in Marvel gaming. The team-based shooter has been well-received, especially in a year where many live-service games have failed. But that’s where it also has its limitations.

As a hero shooter, Marvel Rivals doesn’t feature a story and does not provide the expansive single-player experience that you’d expect from a Marvel game, especially an Avengers game. Marvel fans have been waiting for an Avengers game that lives up to the potential of the franchise, and the Russos might be the ones to deliver it.

We want to see more Marvel games

In the past, movie tie-in games had a mixed reputation, but some were genuinely great (Spider-Man 2, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). The idea of an Avengers game based on Secret Wars could be the perfect way to revive this genre. The Russo brothers also recently collaborated with Netflix to create The Electric State: Kid Cosmo, a prequel mobile game that ties into their upcoming film The Electric State. So they’re already racking up experience.

If we look a bit closer, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra is another promising sign for the future of Marvel gaming. With Uncharted creator Amy Hennig at the helm, this new action-adventure game is set in World War II, and it focuses on Captain America and Black Panther battling Hydra. If it succeeds in 2025, it could pave the way for more Marvel games to follow that formula.

There is a problem with this whole situation, though. And that’s time. Avengers: Secret Wars isn’t expected to hit theaters until 2027, meaning any game based on it would likely arrive years later. We know how long game development can take (we’re looking at you GTA 6), so if the Russos do take on an Avengers game, it would likely be a long-term project. How many of us will still be gaming in the 2030s to experience this?
