Hollywood has seen a lot of actors and actresses finding more than just onscreen chemistry as they fell in love offscreen too, with some of them even going to become some of the entertainment industry’s most beloved power couples of all time. One of these is none other than Jason Ritter and Melanie Lynskey’s pair, who are a bit too heartwarming to not talk about.
For one that met more than a decade ago, the wholesome couple is still going as strong as ever, and Ritter would, in fact, still fight for his wife if the situation calls for it, as he recently hilariously made clear. But perhaps the cutest part about their being together is when the two first got engaged, which is so winsome and amusing, that it deserves a rom-com treatment!

Though the pair have been married for almost half a decade now, Jason Ritter and Melanie Lynskey‘s engagement story will, perhaps, forever go down as one of the finest and most memorable moments of their togetherness. This happened back in 2016, though even the actress didn’t realize she was engaged because Ritter’s initial proposal was “so confusing.”
During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, she shared the same, saying, “I didn’t know what was happening … the day before I had been looking at rings and I tried one on and I was like, ‘Oh, kind of looks like an engagement ring almost. I don’t think I’m going to get it.’ So then, he got me this ring, so I was like, ‘Oh, thanks!’ It didn’t sort of cross my mind.”
This was followed by the Matlock actor presenting “this strange speech” after handing over the ring to his now-wife, pausing the episode of The Bachelor that they were viewing. “I was just sort of like, ‘Oh, okay.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not breaking up?’ He was like, ‘No, No, No!’ So I said, ‘Okay,’ and then I was like, ‘Well, thank you … lovely, good chat!’ ” Lynskey continued.
In fact, it wasn’t until three days later, when the pair went to meet Ritter’s family for Christmas and he announced their engagement to them that the reality of the situation dawned on the Yellowjackets actress. She pointed out, “It was so confusing, and then I said, ‘That’s not usually what a proposal is like. People usually understand that it’s happening.’”
But as hilarious and epic as this proposal was, it was also really heartwarming, for the actor has apparently been trying to make up for the confusion the actress had been in since their engagement. As Lynskey claimed, he had been “very cute” and proposing to Lynskey “over and over.” Like, get a rom-com made on this pair’s love story sometime soon, no?!

While their story is one of the most iconic proposals of all time, the couple is now married with a daughter for more than four years, and their love is still as strong as ever. This is evident from the turn of events that ensued at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscars party, which was held on March 2, 2025. At the event, Melanie Lynskey was dolled up as gorgeously as ever in her sparkling red Christian Siriano gown, complete with jewels and her dark locks falling in loose waves around her shoulders – a look that had fans gushing over her.
In fact, in the wake of all the outpouring of love fans had for the actress, some even presented a light-hearted challenge to the Parenthood star, asking him, “Can you fight?” And Ritter didn’t hesitate to take on that challenge equally light-heartedly as he responded on X, “Yes I can fight,” even going on to argue with fans in the comment section that he could, indeed, fight for Lynskey.
For what it’s worth, this heartwarming couple just reminds us of one very, very famous quote: “After all this time?” “Always.” Always.
