“I will never care about inconsistency”: ‘Dragon Ball DAIMA’ Used a Genius Strategy to Make Up for Its Mid Story

Dragon Ball DAIMA was just what was needed to revolutionize and wake the fans out of their stupor. It not only changed the way that the series was approached by adding elements of adventure and fun into it, but it also made a lot of elements from GT canon.

The series may not have the best writing, and it cannot be said to be airtight what with it being inserted between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. But the point is that it never needed to be perfect. DAIMA was meant to target the new generation of fans and introduce them to Dragon Ball in a fun way.

‘Fun over flaws’ is the secret to DAIMA’s success

Dragon Ball DAIMA fixed a lot of plotholes and inconsistencies from its predecessors, but it left its fair share as well. In fact, its very existence makes it a bit confusing for the viewers. But aside from all that, Dragon Ball DAIMA was a complete rollercoaster ride.

The daunting task of watching episodes that have accumulated for decades scares people away from trying such a legacy series. Therefore, DAIMA can be considered a small trailer into the world of Dragon Ball. Not to mention, Akira Toriyama personally worked on it.

It had everything; it had the action sequences that make your blood pump, twists and banter that will have you laughing heartily, and the sense of pure adventure that has been missing from the franchise far too long.

The series delivered on what truly matters: pure and unfiltered fun. Dragon Ball is a series from a long time ago, and it has never been known for its consistency. (it is not easy to have forty years of content align together perfectly)

Toriyama’s final gift to fans

From the very first episode, it was clear that the anime wasn’t trying to be a groundbreaking masterpiece. It was still Dragon Ball, but with a twist, it had the signs of the original part before Goku grew up and Z began. It was a letter to Dragon Ball’s past and a treat for all the veteran fans who grew up watching Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT.

There were many parts that the fans loved! The character interactions, the involvement of Bulma, and the return of Piccolo to the main scenes (he was relegated to the role of a mentor and a spectator, unable to help Vegeta and Goku for a very long time).

The transformations – Vegeta’s SSJ3 and Goku’s surprising and primal-looking SSJ4 (straight out of GT), seemed like a tribute to all the parts that made up the franchise up until now.

Beyond its entertainment value, DAIMA carries a lot of emotional weight. It was the last Dragon Ball project Akira Toriyama worked on before he passed. It was his final gift, and knowingly or not, he has left his unique mark on the series.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is available to watch on Netflix.
