Wachiuri was a 33/1 outsider at the beginning of the tournament but went on a sensational run, becoming the first African player to make a Modus final.

After landing back home in Nairobi, he was treated like a king and surrounded by adoring fans.

Wachiuri was crowd surfed out the terminal by cheering supporters that also held dart boards aloft.

Fans loved it, with one commenting: “That’s absolutely superb.”

Another added: “The world of darts needs more Peter Wachiuri, it’s been a privilege to watch you play this week.”

A third wrote: “Just love this. Stories like this are what makes darts so fantastic. Great to see another country embracing darts and its new icon.”

Wachiuri was backed by a raucous crowd throughout the week in the UK and some brought vuvuzelas with them to cheer him on.

The fan’s favourite cruised through the Group C and then kicked off finals night with an incredible 147 checkout to see off Jamie Lewis 4-1.

He then beat Colin Osborne 4-3 in the last four before losing the final to Scott Campbell 4-1 despite beating him earlier in the tournament.

Wachiuri thanked fans for their support, writing on social media: “I’m truly honoured to have been part of the Modus Super Series.

“Grateful for the ups, the downs and everything in between.

“The real prize was the experience, making new friends, the laughs and the lessons.

“A big thanks to everyone who made it unforgettable! Back soon.”

Wachiuri was one match off making the World Championships earlier this year as the single African qualifier.

But he lost the final to South Africa’s Cameron Carolissen, who was eventually defeat by Wessel Nijman in the first round at Ally Pally.
