He was finally traced to a hotel in Mombasa, about 300 miles from Nairobi, where he was filmed on CCTV with tragic Campbell Scott.

Cops claimed he’s been hiding out there since the Scot’s body was found dumped in a remote forest.

The drive between the two locations takes at least eight hours.

Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin said: “We have the key suspect in the murder of the Briton after his arrest in Mombasa. He will be in court.”

Suspects Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albanus Mutinda Nzioki appeared in court in Kenya this morning.

According to local reports, a judge ordered them to be held for 21 days to help with the probe into Campbell’s death.

Sources have said the arrests are a “major breakthrough” and could help cops uncover exactly what happened to the businessman, from Dunfermline, Fife.

His body was found dumped in a green sack in a secluded spot about 60 miles from Nairobi.

His hands and legs were bound with rope and it was feared he had been abducted and tortured.

But an autopsy ruled the injuries he suffered would not have been severe enough to kill him.

An insider revealed they were probing whether Campbell had died after taking a “performance enhancing drug”.

He was a director with credit scoring firm FICO and had flown in for a three-day conference before he vanished.

Campbell, 58, visited the Havana bar twice with a mystery man. Cops revealed the suspect called for a taxi for the pair to take them to a property in the Pipeline slum.

A waiter and the cab driver were both arrested and interviewed but it’s understood they are now being treated as witnesses rather than suspects.

Five chilling questions after Scots businessman murdered in Kenya

WE look at five unanswered questions from the chilling case including the motive for the murder and two mystery men spotted hours before his brutal slaying.

1. What was the motive for Campbell’s murder? – At this time a motive for the alleged killing remains unclear but detectives fear he may have been tied up and tortured.

2. Where did Campbell go during the days he was missing? – Teams spent hours on Tuesday at the isolated spot where Campbell’s mutilated body was dumped. Kenyan newspapers said detectives are probing a theory that he was held against his will at a house on the Pipeline estate while thieves stole his cash.

3. Who are the two men spotted with Campbell in his final hours? – A mystery man was captured on CCTV alongside the Scot before he vanished. Officers believe the suspect booked a taxi and then went with Campbell to a notorious slum in the city.

4. Who was the mystery friend he met in a gay bar? – Police believe Campbell visited a gay bar in the upmarket Westlands area of Nairobi on February 15, the day before his disappearance. Kenya’s Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the following day he returned to the bar to meet a friend before taking a taxi to Pipeline, one of the city’s biggest slums, shortly after 7pm.

5. What information was found on Campbell’s phone? – It’s understood the taxi driver led detectives to a house in the Pipeline estate where he said he dropped Campbell off with his mystery pal. Investigations found his mobile phone was last switched on in Mlolongo, Machakos County, on the day he vanished.

Cops launched a huge operation to track down the man seen with Campbell in his final hours.

He was finally detained on Sunday morning, before being transferred back to Nairobi.

It comes days after a grieving pal released one of the final pictures taken of Campbell before he was murdered.

The snap shows him having fun with his partner Simon Farrar and friends days before he was killed.

It was taken on a night out in London at the start of this month, shortly before the businessman went to Nairobi for a conference for credit-scoring firm FICO.

Friend Jason Benterman said: “There you are, being the crazy bugger everyone loved. My heart is broken beyond belief.”
