I Was Today Years Old When I Realized X-Men: First Class Actress Rose Byrne Is in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

Seeing actors before they were famous in other films and projects is always an uncanny experience. We all know Andre Braugher as Captain Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, but how many of us actually remember that he was in The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer?

Now, I have watched Attack of the Clones more times than I can count, and while everyone and their mom knew Keira Knightley was in it, never once did I realize that Rose Byrne was there too!

Rose Byrne played Agent Moira MacTaggert in what is perhaps the best X-Men film from the Fox era, X-Men: First Class, and what baffles me is that her presence in the film went completely unnoticed, despite semi-annual viewings of the Prequel trilogy.

Rose Byrne’s character, much like Keira Knightley’s, has a rich history in Star Wars lore

While Padmé’s handmaidens seem to have gotten a very short amount of screentime in the films, with Rose Byrne barely having a speaking role, the comics and other media greatly expand on their roles, and they serve Padmé and when the Republic fails thanks to the machinations of Emperor Palpatine. Byrne’s character, Dormé, became part of the Amidalans, a covert force of rebels that was made up of the Naboo royal guard and her handmaidens, led by the character Keira Knightley played in the film, Sabé.

The Amidalans would fight Vader on multiple occasions, having come to the conclusion that he was killed by him. The Amidalans as a whole would always be unaware of the fact that Darth Vader is actually the father of Padmé’s children and her husband, Anakin Skywalker. The Amidalans have been largely relegated to comic appearances, prominently featuring in Darth Vader (2020). Vader would go on to have the entire faction purged, but Padmé’s handmaidens would survive it.

Darth Vader remains one of the most tragic characters in the Star Wars canon

Anakin Skywalker’s story might have had its share of ups and downs, but it goes without saying that the character has one of the saddest stories in the Star Wars universe. Be it his time as a Jedi Knight, his children, or his relationship with the woman he loved, Anakin Skywalker messed up everything in his quest for security for those he loved.

Further, by the looks of how the current canon is functioning, Skywalker might still have a lot of work to do, helping Ahsoka fight off Grand Admiral Thrawn and thwart whatever Balon Skoll is up to.

However, Skywalker also inadvertently created the tools for the destruction of the Empire, whether it be his children Luke and Leia, the droids he handled like C3PO and R2D2, or the padawan he trained in Ahsoka Tano. All these characters were instrumental to the fall of the Empire in one way or another, which must be the reason why he was billed as the chosen one after all.
