Before Friday’s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers, LeBron James had jokes for Luka Doncic on his 26th birthday.
“Happy birthday, dawg! Yessir! You are getting old like me baby!” James said.
The two laughed and embraced, but James turned into quite the comedian. After, the Lakers All-Star is 40 years old and is still having an amazing season. He’s averaging 24.9 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 8.6 assists per game. Not to mention, he’s nearly shooting 40% from three-point range.
On the flip side, Doncic is entering his prime and has been elite with the Lakers. He’s averaging 26.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game. With the new Lakers duo on the floor, the acumen is off the charts. They’ve already developed some highlight plays with one another.
Still, the friendship is continuing to brew. For instance, Dirk Nowitzki was impressed by James’s classy move for Doncic’s first game. The former Dallas Mavericks star is still digesting being traded by his former team. Despite that though, Los Angeles is doing everything they can to make him feel at home.
How did Luka Doncic perform for the Lakers on his birthday?
Well, the Slovenian superstar had another noteworthy performance. He dropped 31 points, five rebounds, and three assists on the night. Some of his shot-making is insane, to say the least. It pairs well with the Lakers and alongside James. He’s a shot creator that James hasn’t played with since Kyrie Irving.
Luckily though, the team celebrated the win by singing Happy Birthday to the new Lakers star. Doncic appreciated the gesture and was even given a monstrous birthday cake to go with it. He passed on the cake, which could mean a plethora of things. Since the trade, Doncic has been noticeably committed to his health.
After all, the Mavericks said they traded Doncic because they were concerned about his health. Either way, enjoying a sweet treat after a win isn’t the worst thing in the world. Following the 2024 Western Conference Finals, Doncic was caught having a beer in his hand.
While he had it taken away by Mavericks’ upper management, the Slovenian star indeed likes to indulge. However, the chip on his shoulder is too big to remove. He wants to prove everyone wrong. His teammates, coaches, and even former teammates understand.
At the end of the day, a win was likely the best treat Doncic could’ve received on his birthday by the Lakers. They’ll take on the Clippers once again on Sunday, marking a back-to-back set between the two teams.
