Dragon Ball DAIMA was progressing very well as a narrative. It filled up many loopholes, had the original Dragon Ball feel and set up many elements for an epic plot. It had the perfect setup for a franchise-altering moment, but it completely fumbled the opportunity.

This is regarding the new fusion form that they teased in the series and left unfulfilled. The introduction of the fusion bugs from the Demon Realm hinted at a brand-new type of fusion, one that could have given fans something beyond the usual Vegito and Gogeta combinations.
The Fusion Bugs were introduced for nothing
It has been far too long since Dragon Ball has had a fresh fusion, so the fans were very excited. But instead of following through with a clearly intended plot point, the series abandoned the idea entirely, leaving one of its most intriguing and unique concepts to rot.

The Demon Realm is different from Earth, Namek, or any other planet in the Dragon Ball multiverse. With a unique set of powers and an entire race with abilities that differ from the norm, Dragon Ball had a magical hat that they could pull anything out of, and make it feel logical.
This was likely the best opportunity that there has been in Dragon Ball for a fusion in a long time. From the moment the fusion bugs were introduced, it seemed like they were going to play a significant role in the story. With Vegeta unlocking SSJ3 it felt like a build up for a much bigger event involving the fusion bugs.
A new form of fusion could have redefined how Goku and Vegeta power up, Gogeta and Vegito are old news, and considering Super, the Ultra forms of the duo are far more effective than the two forms.
DAIMA completely disregarded Chekhov’s Gun
The concept of Chekhov’s Gun is that every element in a series or a movie should be important and should contribute to the plot and narrative. So what did the fusion bugs contribute to DAIMA? They showed the fusion bugs and explained them, so what do they influence?

With the precondition of using the bugs, the series could have shown an amazing fusion (which could explain why it was not later seen anywhere in Super). Fans eagerly speculated how they would be used later on in the story- until they were literally discarded, never to be seen again.

Nothing, nada, zilch, it was never used at all, despite being explained properly, demonstrated, even given a prominent amount of screen time. DAIMA defied a fundamental narrative principle to hype up (maybe distract) SSJ4.
There was no payoff or a final twist, or even an indication that it will show up in Dragon Ball Super. This is why it was so frustrating for the fans to understand and comprehend why it was placed into the story in the first place.
Dragon Ball DAIMA is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
