Unlike Brock Lesnar, A WWE Legend Refused to Break The Undertaker’s WrestleMania Streak For Selfless Reason

Brock Lesnar was already a legend when he broke The Streak of The Undertaker back in 2014. The Deadman was on a hot streak of WrestleMania wins for the past twenty-three years before Lesnar pinned him down and sent him to the hospital at WrestleMania XXX. However, the controversial win was first reportedly offered to Edge.

The legendary star mentioned that he was offered the storyline of breaking The Undertaker’s streak but he declined as he had already made it. Edge also reportedly pitched Roman Reigns to be able to do it instead as he was an up-and-coming star and would have needed the legendary win to go to the next level.

Brock Lesnar was a legend from the beginning and is still the only fighter to have won heavyweight championships in WWE, UFC, NJPW, IGF, and NCAA. Lesnar is known for his incredible strength and star status, and while he is on hiatus now, especially after being named in a lawsuit against Vince McMahon, he is still considered one of the greats.

However, his controversial win against The Undertaker in 2014, thus ending The Streak, was received intense backlash back then. Lesnar had just lost an important UFC championship match at the time but he was still a star who did not need such a boost. In fact, the first star who was approached to break The Undertaker’s streak also did not need the boost and he knew it.

Edge mentioned when he appeared on the Impaulsive podcast that he rejected the offer to break The Undertaker’s streak as he felt he had already achieved the main event status he had aspired for and an up-and-coming star would benefit more from it. He said,

It was kind of thrown by me like, ‘What do you think?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely not. Why would we do that? That makes zero sense to me. I’m already a made man. I’m in the main event of WrestleMania. What’s it going to do for me?’…Let’s save that for somebody who can really use that boost.

Edge reportedly wanted Roman Reigns to be the guy who broke The Streak. The WWE star mentioned that the Tribal Chief was a promising up-and-coming star then and the win would have really boosted his career. While Reigns ended up becoming a legend in his own right, Edge reportedly disagreed with the choice to go with Brock Lesnar.

Vince McMahon took the decision to let Brock Lesnar end The Undertaker’s streak

The Undertaker began his streak of undefeated WrestleMania matches in 1991 and won several game formats before he was beaten by Brock Lesnar. The match reportedly even ended up with the Deadman being hospitalized after suffering a concussion earlier in the day. The loss was one of the most harrowing moments in WWE history.

Vince McMahon reportedly planned on breaking The Undertaker’s streak as he felt the wrestler was gearing for retirement and would soon be leaving the promotion. He reportedly thought that he would close his legacy before bowing out. He mentioned in an interview with Stone Cold Steve Austin,

Nobody wants to give back to the business more than the Undertaker, more than Mark Callaway…When you look down the roster, who else was it going to be? No one on the roster, potentially. And the following year, year after that – it was timing. The one person whose time was there at that moment, who Mark thought ‘Okay, this is it’ – it was Brock. I made the decision.

Brock Lesnar’s manager Paul Heyman reportedly pitched it for CM Punk, who was reportedly planning on leaving WWE then. He wanted Punk to capitalize on the win and stay back for more years, but it eventually did not pan out.
