Jason Statham has been an icon for the action genre for decades now. While his most formative films were in the early 2000s, his fans have been waiting for something significant for years now. While Wrath of Man did come close, it did not possess the same essence that made his films so enjoyable.

This pattern persisted until The Beekeeper buzzed into the picture. The film easily entered the same category as classics like The Transporter yet stood out in the best ways possible. Having been directed by the creator of 2016’s Suicide Squad, it is not surprising that the film’s fast-paced action has led it on the path of a sequel.
However, it would seem that David Ayer has been replaced with another director, and the decision could make the series a lot more bloody.
Jason Statham is coming back buzzing

Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper was an excellent film in the eyes of viewers and critics alike. While it is certainly not a masterpiece, it does possess impressive ratings, having a 71% rating among critics and 92% among fans on Rotten Tomatoes, which is something even Wrath of Man wasn’t able to achieve.
Most notably, the film had a lot of personality, which made audiences want more from the character and the world. With this, many would be glad to know that the film is coming back for a second part. Although fans can expect a similar tone as the first film, with Statham coming back for the sequel, there is one very notable difference in the second part.

It was reported by Variety that on top of the film getting a second part, its director is also changing, with David Ayer passing the mantle down to Timo Tjahjanto. The Indonesian film director is best known for making films like Nobody 2, The Shadow Strays, and The Night Comes for Us.
Timo Tjahjanto could make The Beekeeper 2 a lot darker
Timo Tjahjanto has a very distinctive style of filmmaking. Although it cannot be fully put in the category of horror, he does entice similar emotions from his audience. His projects very notably have some very dark and grotesque imagery, even if the film doesn’t necessarily call for it.

While this only makes his films a lot more enjoyable and works very well with critics, this could mean many things for Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper 2. David Ayer’s style is known for being somewhat darker; however, it is nowhere close to the kind of movies that Tjahjanto releases.
With this in mind, one can imagine that The Beekeeper 2 is going to be a lot darker, not just in action, but potentially in themes as well. Even though the first movie was already ‘R’ rated, the next one could truly test the limits of this age guideline.
