“I’m not even mad at Ryan”: Ryan Reynolds Was So Rude After He Was Told His Jim Carrey Impersonation Was Unnecessary

Behind-the-scenes drama is far more common in Hollywood than you’d think, and sometimes, the stories that emerge from it are more entertaining than the films themselves. Ryan Reynolds also has an anecdote that falls into this category, which has recently been narrated by his co-star.

This was long before Reynolds became a household name and was still trying to find his footing in the industry as a young actor. From on-set clashes to Jim Carrey impressions, here’s how the actor’s early career struggles shaped the star we know today.

Matthew Lawrence, who most people know from Boy Meets World, hosts a podcast called Brotherly Love, where he spilled some tea about Ryan Reynolds. He spoke about his experience of working with the Deadpool-famed actor in a horror-comedy film titled Boltneck, where Reynolds was hell-bent on doing a Jim Carrey impression, which wasn’t appreciated at all.

They told him, ‘This is a bad Jim Carrey impersonation. This is not what we hired you to do. You can’t impersonate someone. You gotta do your own thing. And he got upset at that. He was like, ‘I’m doing my thing.

Lawrence described Reynolds as a “total schlub” and claimed that he was a very difficult individual to work with. Even the production team found it hard to incorporate the actor. Lawrence was a seasoned child artist and knew the demands of a film set, but that wasn’t the case with Reynolds, who was relatively new, and “he’d walk about, just wanted to kind of do his thing.”

The clash between Ryan Reynolds and the production team even led to a meeting where the crew expressed their frustrations about him. Lawrence recalled a team member saying, “I can’t believe this guy. We had so much hope for this guy. He’s going nowhere.” But the co-star himself saw Reynolds’ antics and stubbornness in a different light.

To be honest, I’m not even mad at Ryan in the sense that he actually stayed true to who he is authentically because he was trying to Deadpool it!

So even though many believed that the Red Notice actor’s behavior on the set was unprofessional, Lawrence feels like it was a sign of things to come. Reynolds had a unique brand of humor and authenticity, which would later be of much value in his career, especially for playing Deadpool.

In a way, his early tantrums were a preview of the unconventional path he would take to stardom. So, Boltneck was only a stepping stone in the actor’s journey of becoming one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars.
