“Going from Damien Chazelle to Shawn Levy is hilarious”: Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Sounds Great but I’m Not Expecting to Getting Blown Away

More details emerge on Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film, which has been reportedly circling Ryan Gosling for the lead role. It was reported last month that the Deadpool & Wolverine director has been working on a Star Wars movie since 2022. Jonathan Tropper, who worked on Levy’s The Adam Project, has been working on the script for over a year.

Gosling’s name being attached to the project is exciting for every Star Wars fan. However, I am not entirely convinced that Gosling alone could save the film. The missteps that Kathleen Kennedy took in her last few projects and bringing in Levy to direct are some of the concerns that I have regarding the project.

The news that Ryan Gosling is set to headline a Star Wars standalone film is exciting for any true fans of George Lucas’ space epic. But they wouldn’t be so happy to hear that Shawn Levy is set to direct and produce the film under his 21 Laps banner alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm. THR reported in January that Gosling’s possible addition fast-tracked the film’s development.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Kennedy revealed that the project takes place after the previous nine films and will be set five to six years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. She also added that the film will bring back some of the characters from the sequel saga along with new characters. According to Kennedy, it will be the next Star Wars film to go into production.

I am truly excited to see Ryan Gosling take on a major role in the Star Wars universe, but it would be a step down for the actor. One fan on X pointed out Gosling starring in Levy’s film after working with the likes of Damien Chazelle will be hilarious to watch. Some fans suggested that the Drive star needed to run from the project.

Another shared that the mention of sequel trilogy characters returning itself made the film look bad. It appears that not everyone looks up to Levy to save the universe. Some of the fan reactions read:

It was clear from Deadpool & Wolverine that Levy was more of an actor’s director, with a general style of filmmaking. He is not exactly the director that I would trust another Star Wars film with.

Kathleen Kennedy also provided updates on other Star Wars films

Kathleen Kennedy revealed that she is currently producing The Mandalorian & Grogu, post which she will move on to Levy’s film. The former will hit the theaters on May 22, 2026. Pedro Pascal’s film wrapped up the shoot in December 2024.

Kennedy also shared that Simon Kinberg was going to script a Star Wars trilogy and the production works are “rolling fast and furiously” on that project. It was earlier reported that Daisy Ridley will return to this trilogy of movies. She confirmed that the movie written and produced by Kinberg is “the next iteration, the new saga that moves us into the future.”

Kennedy also confirmed that three to four Star Wars projects are down the line to go into the development phase. She shared a prequel film with James Mangold got delayed because of his involvement in the Oscar-nominated film, A Complete Unknown. She also shared that Taika Waititi is working with another writer on a project, which is also far from going into development.
