Mr. Gregory Afoko has finally breathed the air of freedom after spending almost a decade behind bars at the Nsawam Medium Prison.
His release on Friday, February 28, 2025 comes after he successfully met all bail conditions set by the High Court.
Afoko, who was accused of conspiring with Asabke Alangdi in the 2015 acid attack that led to the death of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, had his bail granted in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties, one of whom had to be justified.
His release follows years of unsuccessful bail applications. Reports indicate that his brother, Paul Afoko, will also be released soon.
Background
Gregory Afoko was arrested in 2015 and charged alongside Asabke Alangdi for allegedly ambushing Adams Mahama at his residence and dousing him with acid. Mahama suffered severe burns and later succumbed to his injuries while being airlifted to Accra for treatment.
The case, which has dragged on for nearly a decade, saw Asabke Alangdi convicted, while Afoko remained in detention as his trial continued.
Brief Facts of the Case
According to court documents, on May 14, 2015, Gregory’s brother, Paul Afoko, then National Chairman of the NPP, and General Secretary Kwabena Agyepong, travelled to Bolgatanga for a meeting, which was violently disrupted by thugs allegedly organised by Adams Mahama. The attack was reportedly due to Afoko and Agyepong’s campaign against Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and for failing to inform Mahama about the meeting.
Following the incident, the prosecution alleged that Gregory Afoko and Asabke Alangdi formed a youth group to protect those seen as opposing Akufo-Addo. On May 20, 2015, the two reportedly ambushed Mahama at his residence and doused him with a substance suspected to be acid.
Mahama, who was attacked while seated in his pickup truck, sustained severe burns. His wife, Hajia Zenabu Adams, who rushed to his aid, also suffered burns during the rescue. Before his death, Mahama reportedly named Gregory Afoko and Asabke as his attackers.
Mahama succumbed to his injuries while being airlifted to Accra for treatment. A post-mortem revealed he died from shock due to extensive acid burns.
Gregory Afoko was later arrested and led police to Asabke’s father’s house. However, Asabke had fled with his wife, leaving behind their baby.
The case, which has dragged on for nearly a decade, has seen numerous legal twists, making the court’s decision to grant Gregory Afoko bail a significant turn in the long-standing legal battle.
