Security has been tightened at Ghana’s Parliament ahead of President John Dramani Mahama’s first State of the Nation Address, with personnel from various security agencies deployed to ensure a smooth and incident-free event.
Ahead of the President’s arrival, heavily armed security officers have taken strategic positions in and around the parliamentary premises.
Access to the chamber is being strictly regulated, with thorough screening of lawmakers, government officials, and invited guests.
Security dogs have also been deployed inside the chamber to assist in detecting any potential threats.
The heightened measures are part of efforts to guarantee the safety of the President and other high-profile dignitaries expected to attend the event.
Personnel from the Ghana Police Service, the National Security Secretariat, and the Ghana Armed Forces are working together to maintain order.
The State of the Nation Address, in line with Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, provides an opportunity for the government to outline its economic blueprint and plans for national development.
President Mahama, who assumed office just over a month ago, is expected to account for his stewardship so far and give Ghanaians an understanding of the state of affairs inherited from the previous administration. His address will also outline immediate interventions and policies his government intends to implement in the coming days.
Organised labour is keenly anticipating the speech, expecting the President to provide a clear plan on reinstating individuals whose appointments were revoked by his government. Additionally, there is widespread public interest in how the administration intends to address the rising cost of living, a concern that continues to dominate national discourse.
With security at an all-time high, all is set for what is expected to be a highly scrutinised address, as Ghanaians look forward to the President’s vision for the country’s economic and social progress.
