“Not everybody liked it, but…”: Vince Zampella, the Guy EA Put In Charge After Battlefield 2042 Bombed Has a Good Reason for Applauding the Game

The last release in EA’s Battlefield franchise was Battlefield 2042. The game is solely a multiplayer experience, something we hadn’t seen in the franchise before. EA’s top executives had high hopes for the game. However, upon release, it became clear that the title needed more time in the oven.

At launch, the DICE game was bashed by players and critics left and right. Players couldn’t understand why DICE ditched some of the core aspects of the Battlefield franchise in favor of chasing industry trends. Worst of all, the game was filled with server issues, bugs, glitches, missing features, and much more.

Many in the community regard 2042 as a flop. However, the guy EA has put in charge of the future of the franchise still appreciates the game.

Battlefield 2042 wasn’t a complete failure according to Respawn CEO

After years of rumors and speculation, it’s confirmed that the next Battlefield game is right around the corner. With the first official reveal and gameplay being teased, EA has kicked off the hype train for the next entry in the FPS franchise.

Right before the first reveal of the upcoming project, the CEO of Respawn Entertainment, Vince Zampella, sat down with IGN and talked about the next Battlefield. According to him, the upcoming shooter takes a back-to-basics approach, which is considered to be the franchise’s peak.

While chatting, Zampella also opened up about 2042‘s poor reception and the various controversial decisions surrounding the game. He acknowledged that the team experimented with new ideas, but not all changes fit the franchise’s core identity.

I don’t know what the rationale was, but for me, it’s like the team tried something new. You have to applaud that effort. Not everybody liked it, but you got to try things. It didn’t work. It didn’t fit.

Even though 2042 failed to hit the mark and faced a lot of backlash, Zampella doesn’t consider the game to be a failure. He appreciates the efforts made by the developers to innovate the franchise and the challenges brought by the game.

With Zampella heading the upcoming game, EA doesn’t want to repeat the same situation with the new Battlefield. The developers want to deliver a polished and experienced project right from the launch, rather than releasing a broken mess that needs a number of updates to fix.

Next Battlefield game will bring a crucial feature from 2042

While Zampella believes that 2042 taught EA a lesson, it still doesn’t change the fact that the game tanked Battlefield‘s reputation. However, that doesn’t mean that the game didn’t have some cool features.

According to one of the videos posted by YouTuber Flakfire covering the recent Battlefield Labs reveal, developers have confirmed that Battlefield Portal is making a return.

Considering the success of the feature, it was likely that it would be incorporated into future entries. However, what’s shocking is that EA has confirmed it at a stage where the game is still in a pre-alpha state of development. The game is expected to hit the shelves in 2026 at the earliest.

What’s so special about Battlefield Portal? Well, it’s a feature that allowed gamers to make a leap across time and space to play custom game modes and maps that used some of the best mechanics, weapons, and vehicles in the franchise.

Gamers have always been attached to the classics of the Battlefield franchise, and the chance to bring them into custom game modes will certainly help the next Battlefield game.

With that said, are you excited for the future of Battlefield? Let us know in the comments below.
