It was a crazy first game in charge for the ex-Ibrox skipper at Rugby Park.

Rangers‘ form away from home was a major concern during Philippe Clement‘s tenure.

And Ferguson would have feared a familiar story after his team fell two goals behind early doors tonight.

Joe Wright opened the scoring for Kilmarnock after 11 minutes before Brad Lyons made it two just three minutes later.

Ferguson, 47, looked to his bench shortly after to try and turn things around in Ayrshire, with Ridvan Yilmaz replacing Clinton Nsiala.

Many fans questioned the substitution at the time, fearing the first half snub could impact the former AC Milan’s confidence going forward.

But it proved to be the right call from Ferguson as his backline looked far more composed with James Tavernier partnering Robin Propper in the middle instead.

Rangers went on to win the game 4-2 thanks to Vaclav Cerny‘s first half goal and Cyriel Dessers‘ double plus Nedim Bajrami’s strike in the second period.

It was an emotional roller-coaster for Ferguson, his players and fans.

By the 15-minute mark it looked like the interim was going to feel the wrath of raging fans after the game.

But instead he was greeted by thousands of delighted travelling supporters who serenaded him by chanting his name at full-time.
