I tried supermarket dupes of Lindt Golden Bunny – there was one clear winner and it’s cheaper than original

EASTER is just around the corner, and supermarkets across the country are selling a huge range of chocolate goodies.

From Easter Eggs to bunnies, shoppers are spoilt for choice in the run-up to April 20.

I tested all of the supermarket dupes of the Lindt Golden Bunny

Many shoppers will be picking up the fan-favourite Lindt Golden Bunny, which is available in two sizes and is a great gift.

Wrapped in gold foil with a red ribbon collar and a gold bell, the Swiss chocolate bunny always goes down a treat.

But many shops also sell their own versions, creating their own dupe bunnies.

We scoured the shelves to find the best dupe for the Lindt bunny from Ireland’s most popular supermarkets.

Lindt Golden Milk Chocolate Bunny, 100g

This is the original, with the 100g option currently selling for €6 (or €5 with a clubcard) in Tesco.

The Lindt bunny is a fan favourite

It has been around since 1845, making this bunny 178 years old.

It is highly regarded as the best Easter gift to give someone, and now even comes in a stylish animal print design.

But when it comes to the price and what you get for it, it is more expensive.

The price of the Lindt Golden Bunny is always changing in stores, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for a good deal.

While I do love Lindt chocolate, I was surprised to find that it wasn’t my favourite of the lineup.

Lidl Favourina Fine Milk Chocolate Easter Bunny, 150g

Lidl’s dupe of the Lindt bunny was amazing – I tried this first and genuinely thought it wouldn’t be beaten.

Lidl blew it out of the park with their bunny for €2.99

The chocolate is very smooth, and it tastes much more expensive than its €2.99 price.

It had the perfect amount of thickness and crunch, and was divine with a cup of tea – melting perfectly and complementing the tea to leave a very nice taste.

The design was gorgeous; it was wrapped in foil with detailing in different colours.

It had a lemon-coloured bow with a silver love heart around its neck.

Inside, the chocolate had detailing on the eyes, mouth and ears.

The aftertaste was delicious and I would happily sit down in the evening with this as an after dinner treat with tea.

This is a brilliant gift for any little ones, and costs half the price.

Aldi Specially Selected Milk Chocolate Bunny, 100g

Aldi is quite possibly the champion of food dupes, but I was surprised by this.

Aldi’s bunny is an affordable €2.49

The packaging is very cute, it has gold foil with detailing and has a blue bow with a pendant that has a bunny engraved on it.

The chocolate itself has detailing on the ears to give it texture, but it was messier than Lidl’s version when breaking it.

The chocolate was very smooth, but I wouldn’t say it was as nice as Lidl’s one.

The aftertaste was not as nice as Lidl’s, though it melts more easily.

It was also the lightest of all the bunnies and paired lovely with tea.

It was the cheapest of all the bunnies at €2.49, so is great from a price point.

M&S Baby Bunny Swiss Milk Chocolate, 70G

This was by far my favourite, hands down – but is ironically more expensive than the Lindt one at the moment, costing €5.75.

The packaging is so cute, with a blue bunny surrounded by leaves, carrots, flowers and smaller bunnies.

The chocolate is very smooth with a perfect thickness, and it is delicious.

It had great detailing, with little whiskers and eyes.

It has an amazing aftertaste that is completely different to the other ones – likely because it’s made of Swiss chocolate.

It melts in the mouth, and is, in my opinion, the best with tea.

It would make a great gift and tastes more expensive than it is.

It also looks closest to the Lindt one in both size and shape, but it doesn’t have a bell around the neck.

Dunnes Stores Simply Better Irish Handmade Belgian Chocolate Bunny

This is the largest of them all, costing €4.99.

The Dunnes Stores bunny is €4.99

The packaging looks expensive, and you are getting double the chocolate compared to the Lindt bunny for almost the same price.

Made from Belgian chocolate, it is perfect to give as a gift.

It’s handmade in Cavan, so you know you’re buying local with this.

The chocolate is thick but crumbles easily — so have a plate handy.

It’s not as sweet as the others on this list, but is very soft and smooth.

It leaves a nice aftertaste and pairs very well with tea.

  • Taste: 7/10
  • Price: 4/10
  • Total: 11/20

To conclude, while the M&S bunny is delicious, it is actually more expensive than the Lindt one.

As a result, I will have to choose the Lidl one as my winner.

It is great from a price point of view but also tastes great, so it’s the winner for me.

But in all honesty, I wouldn’t complain if I were given any of these with a nice cup of tea.
