Robert Pattinson’s inspiration for Mickey 17

Robert Pattinson is a seasoned actor known for his roles in Twilight and Batman. Yet, the actor has a diverse roster of filmography that showcases his versatility. The Lighthouse and The Devil All The Time are some examples of his mastery of accents.

From French and Southern to Queens, Pattinson’s acting in these movies is commendable. He indeed has no formal training in theatre or film acting yet, his performance would shut the critics up for good. This also goes well with his upcoming film with Parasite Director.

Bong Joon-ho made waves with his black comedy thriller film Parasite. Not only did it bag awards but the movie is unconventional in many aspects. As a commentary on the society and class in South Korea, it brought several social issues to light.

With Mickey 17, however, the Director blends science fiction elements with black comedy. It features seasoned actors like Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, and Toni Colette. But Pattinson most certainly stole the spotlight with his eccentricities in acting. The inspiration behind this is even more interesting.

While speaking to Letterboxd, Pattinson revealed anime as an inspiration behind his mannerisms in the movie. He said:

I definitely was getting some references from, like, anime and kind of – and just in the kind of discordant, like, mood changes. Especially for Mickey 18, where you just kind of go from 0 to 100 incredibly quickly, and I always really like that in anime, when you just suddenly have someone entirely static and then suddenly they’re furious out of nowhere, and I think I was trying to do some kind of emulation of that, I guess.

Interestingly, the actor shares a connection with the Japanese animation industry. He previously voiced the role of the Grey Heron in Hayao Miyazaki’s movie The Boy and The Heron. This solidifies the anime industry’s impact and influence on Hollywood as a whole.

To Ghibli and Beyond: Anime’s Impact on Hollywood

It is widespread knowledge that Hollywood has produced impeccable works in the past decades. From Matrix to Avatar, the films are nothing short of masterpieces. And though the movies are visually stunning and novel, they are highly inspired by Japanese directors.

Katsuhiro Otomo’s film Akira inspired both Stranger Things and Matrix. The movie’s iconic bike slide has been recreated for decades. It also paved the way for several cyberpunk series in the future. But more than that, it remains a cult classic because of its offbeat plot, characters, and futuristic setting.

Besides that, Perfect Blue and its impact is reflected in Darren Aronofsky’s movie Black Swan. The Director is influenced by Satoshi Kon’s cinematic brilliance and has praised him on several occasions. The influence, inspiration, and impact of Japanese animation make one thing certain.

From the profundity of the plot to expressions, these stories are a blend of impression and expression. In Pattinson’s case, it brought out his craftsmanship as an actor and we cannot wait to see it in its full glory.

Mickey 17 is scheduled to be released on March 7, 2025.
