The business was established in 1900 and stocks thousands of books, gifts, and religious items.

The owners of the much-loved shop announced the shutters will be pulled down in March.

A closing down sale will take place with items slashed by 50%.

In a statement on its website, the shop said: “We deeply regret that B. McCall Barbour Christian bookshop is moving towards closure on 14 March, 2025 after 125 years serving as both a ministry and literature service.

“To that end, a ‘Closing Down Sale’ is now effective, with all existing stock reduced by 50%.

“Thank you to all our customers over the many years for your faithful support, with your custom and your prayers – both very much appreciated.”

The book shop boasts a slew of rave reviews online and currently holds a 4.9-star score on Google.

One customer said: “A great shop which is a wonderful little gem of a place. I highly recommend it if you are looking for very good Christian books, CDs and other literature and goods.”

Another said: “This is a traditional family-run Christian book shop. The owners are dedicated, hard-working folk who put everything into offering the best possible service to their customers.”

A third added: “Lovely little shop, packed full with Christian books. Shops like this are few and far between but really worthy of support.”

Retailers have been feeling the squeeze since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to the soaring cost of living crisis.

High energy costs and a move to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll, and many shops have struggled to keep going.

Last month, a major car retailer with dozens of UK locations suddenly closed its Edinburgh branch.
