The British Transport Police (BTP) have conducted a study of all 2,580 stations in the UK, ranking them from highest to lowest based on their crime rates.
At the top of the list in Scotland is a small station in Ayrshire which comes in at number 67 overall.
According to analysis by the Daily Mail, Newton-on-Ayr has been uncovered as the most dangerous train station north of the border.
It recorded a crime rate of 120.8 per million passengers.
But figures show that only seven crimes have actually been reported at the terminal.
Five of these crimes were sex offences or violent crimes, while one was damage, and the other was a weapons offence.
Despite the low number of crimes, it ranks at the top of the list due to its lack of passengers.
In 2024, just 57,950 passengers boarded trains at the station.
Second on the list in Scotland is another rural stop in North Lanarkshire.
Caldercruix came in at number 96 in the UK, reporting a crime rate of 99.8 per million, with just 70,158 passengers last year.
Offences included two violent or sex-related crimes, two involving weapons, two for damage, and one theft.
Coming in at number three in Scotland – and 143 in the UK – is Whinhill Station, in Greenock.
This was closely followed by Lochgelly, in Fife, which came in at 149th.
However, when it comes to crime count itself, Glasgow Central came in as the most dangerous.
Over 28million passengers flood through the station every year, with 351 crimes reported to the BTP.
Between 2023 and 2024, 80,000 crimes were recorded, with violent crimes and sex offences reaching all-time highs.

The 10 most dangerous stations in Scotland have been ranked by the BTP in the list below.
- Newton on Ayr
- Caldercruix
- Whinhill Station
- Lochgelly
- Conon Bridge
- Hartwood Station
- Blair Atholl Station
- Fairlie Beach
- Ardrossan South Beach Station
- Kirkconnel Station
A spokesperson for the BTP said: “Every offence is one too many, and while we understand the concern that we recorded more total crimes last year, it’s important to understand these figures within their context.
“The chance of becoming a victim of crime on the railway remains extremely low, and reports of high harm crime such as robbery and violence remain low at 2.2 incidents per million passenger journeys.
“Crucially, we know that these figures are influenced in part by more and more people having the confidence to report things like sexual harassment to us, and through the abundance of daily intelligence-led proactive operations taking place right across the railway network in England, Scotland and Wales.
“For example, in just one week alone in November our County Lines Taskforce arrested 65 people and seized 42 weapons through proactive deployments, and stop and search is at its highest use in BTP since 2010, with a 50 per cent positive find rate in the last nine months.
“It is also important not to sensationalise crime rate data. Stations like Johnston appear to have a high crime rate because they have a low number of crimes recorded combined with a low footfall of passengers.
“But with less than one crime recorded per month it’s simply incorrect to say that passengers are at greater risk of crime at these stations.”
