If you grew up in the ‘90s, you probably remember exactly where you were when you heard about Princess Diana’s tragic passing. It was one of those world-stopping moments that left millions in shock. And while many people felt a deep sadness over the loss of the beloved Princess of Wales, young Meghan Markle was apparently devastated.

Who wasn’t heartbroken watching those gut-wrenching scenes of Prince Harry and Prince William walking behind their mother’s casket? But Meghan’s connection to Princess Diana seemed to run much deeper. And, as we later learned, her admiration for the late princess wasn’t just a fleeting childhood moment, it was the beginning of what many people would call a lifelong obsession.
Meghan Markle was devastated when Princess Diana died

According to royal biographer Andrew Morton (via US Weekly), yes, the same guy who spilled all the tea on Princess Diana herself, Meghan Markle was deeply affected by the Princess’ death. She cried while watching her funeral, taking the loss to heart like so many others around the world.
Now, it’s perfectly normal for people to feel emotional over such a tragic event, but this was more than just a casual case of sympathy tears. Markle’s connection to the princess seemed personal, almost as if she felt a deep kinship with the late Princess despite never having met her.
Fast forward a couple of decades, and Markle was walking down the aisle to marry Princess Diana’s youngest son, Prince Harry. Talk about a plot twist! Some might say it was fate, others might call it the most ambitious manifestation ever. Either way, the moment Markle became part of the royal family, comparisons to the Princess of Wales kicked into high gear.
Meghan Markle’s obsession with Princess Diana was hard to miss

For someone who claimed that she didn’t know much about the royal family, Meghan Markle sure seemed to have done her homework on Princess Diana. Clearly, her admiration for Diana had been brewing since she was a child. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey (via The Sun), she said,
I didn’t do any research about what that would mean. I didn’t feel any need to, because everything I needed to know he was sharing with me. Everything we thought I needed to know, he was telling me.
Even Markle’s childhood friend revealed that she had a fascination with the royal family, and Princess Diana in particular. According to People, there’s even a famous childhood photo of young Markle posing outside Buckingham Palace. So, the whole “I didn’t do any research” narrative? Yeah, that’s about as believable as a unicorn sighting in Central London.
And then there’s the fashion. Oh, the fashion! Markle has been caught many times seemingly recreating Princess Diana’s iconic looks. It’s almost as if she has a Pinterest board titled Diana: The Royal Blueprint. While some fans are okay with it, most fans absolutely despise how Markle is just blatantly copying such an iconic person.
This is creepy!

She wants to pick up where Diana left off? That would definitely trash the legacy Diana left behind. Meghan’s a user. Using Diana for her own selfish gain.

Even the way she handled her exit from the royal family seemed to mirror Princess Diana’s infamous struggle with the institution. Markle has spoken openly about feeling stifled and unsupported, much like Princess Diana did back in her day. And while the circumstances were different, the parallels are impossible to ignore.
Was Meghan Markle’s admiration for Princess Diana just a case of childhood inspiration turned real-life fairytale? Or was she always planning her royal trajectory with Princess Diana as her muse? Either way, one thing is certain, Princess Diana’s legacy lives on, and Meghan Markle has made sure she’s a central part of that story.
