Communications 101

Today, I have a different topic for discussion. Imagine your phone ringing non-stop – messages flood in, interviews are requested and expectations mount. Can we realistically be available at all times?

The answer is a resounding no. Can we accept and grant every interview at any given moment? Again, no – not if we want to first verify the information and communicate effectively, with preparation, clarity and impact.

Recently, a colleague asked me how I manage to handle so many calls from seemingly every Tom, Dick, and Harry. Her curiosity led me to show her my WhatsApp messages and explain why I was considering a second phone number. The reality is that effective communication is not just about being available; it is about being responsive – knowing when to engage, how to manage expectations and when to prioritize preparation over immediacy.

For those in positions of responsibility – whether as public officials, policymakers or leaders –communication is a vital tool of influence and leadership. The ability to respond appropriately to calls, messages, and emails is not just a courtesy; it is a testament to your professionalism and work ethic.

Strong leadership is built on strategic communication. Your personal and professional growth is, in many ways, a reflection of how well you manage business interactions. Yes, keeping your followers updated on social media is useful, but nothing replaces the impact of a timely response to a call or message. It signals attentiveness, respect and responsibility. And these are qualities that define a true leader.

For those in politics, the stakes are even higher. Real-time, effective communication is the lifeline of political engagement. A failure to respond or a poorly managed message can sow discord, create unnecessary tension and destroy otherwise positive rapprochement between party members and leadership.

The difference between unity and division often lies in how well we communicate, how swiftly we clarify and how strategically we engage.
