Netflix’s Defenders saga was an unexpected hit thanks to its unique roaster of underdog superhero characters and enticing storylines that delivered just the right amount of punch, kick-ass action, and emotional gravity. So it was a pleasant surprise when the saga was officially included in the MCU timeline and Daredevil: Born Again was kicked off featuring the iconic characters.
So while we will be getting Matt Murdock back in action soon, Marvel fans have another happy news to celebrate: The Punisher special. In a surprise announcement, Marvel Studios revealed Jon Bernthal will return once again as Frank Castle after Daredevil: Born Again in his own Marvel special.
Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher to get a Marvel Special
Netflix’s Defenders saga has always been a favorite of Marvel fans, who have long held the belief that no other Marvel series has come close to the phenomenon that the Defenders saga was. While it is true that not all underdog superheroes from the Netflix Marvel world managed to entice fans, some of them made such an impression that Marvel fans have been yearning for them to come back.
And one of those characters is Jon Bernthal‘s Frank Castle or the Punisher. Next to be seen in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, the character will soon be getting his own Marvel special similar to Marvel’s previous specials like The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, etc. As Entertainment Weekly confirmed, Bernthal is also writing the script along with director Reinaldo Marcus Green.
As the head of Marvel Television, Brad Winderbaum revealed to EW, the idea of the special was crafted during the filming of Daredevil: Born Again. Although more details about the special have not been revealed, Winderbaum stated that this is a huge opportunity and the greatest thing ever as a fan since Jon Bernthal knows his Marvel character inside out as no one else does. The release date of The Punisher Special and other details are yet to be revealed.
Marvel Studios is dabbling with the idea of bringing back the Defenders
Netflix’s Defenders saga was unlike any other Marvel project out there. Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Defenders saga was brutal, bloody, and gory, filled with action and elements that the family-friendly MCU would have never allowed. This unique element drew in the older Marvel fans, making the series one of the top Marvel projects of all time.
However, the series’ brutality wasn’t the only catchy part. Fans particularly enjoyed the more grounded and emotionally driven storytelling, making series like Daredevil, The Punisher, and Luke Cage so interesting to watch. Now that Matt Murdock and most of his cohorts are already back in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel has also been dabbling with the idea of bringing other Defenders back.
A while back, Brad Winderbaum had remarked to Entertainment Weekly that while nothing is for certain, it has been exciting to be able to play in that sandbox. An idea still in exploration, the upcoming The Punisher Special seems to be a step taken in such a direction. And fans hope Marvel will continue to take such steps as long as they do not disturb the feel and essence of Netflix’s Defenders saga.
Daredevil: Born Again will have its two-episode premiere on March 4, only on Disney+.
