Vital A-road used by 40,000 drivers every day will close THIS WEEKEND for major works – check your route

A MAJOR A-road used by 40,000 motorists every day is due to close this weekend for roadworks.

Diversions will be in place whilst the structure maintenance takes place, but drivers are being warned to give extra time for journeys.

There will be carriageway closures between the exit and entry sliproads at Junction 9 on the A1 (M) at Letchworth gate in both directions.

The work started on February 24 and will continue through to March 1.

Drivers will need to follow diversions through the up and over slip roads, which will bring cars back onto the A1 (M).

This comes after the M4 was shut in both directions after a body was found on the carriageway.

The tragic discovery of human remains were found between junctions 20 and 21.

Avon and Somerset Police said that the force was called at 6.40pm on February 22 and human remains were found when officers arrived at the scene.

In a statement, National Highways said: “Road users caught within the closure will be released by turning around under supervision of our Traffic Officers and police.

“This is a complex operation and will take time due to the location and volume of traffic.”

Avon and Somerset Police said in a full statement: “The M4 is closed in both directions after a body was found on the carriageway between junctions 20 (Almondsbury Interchange) and 21 (Awkley).

“Police were called at 6.40pm on Saturday 22 February by several drivers reporting something in the road. Officers attended and found human remains.

“Enquiries are underway to identify the deceased and notify next of kin, while an investigation to establish how the person came to be on the motorway continues.

“The road is expected to remain closed into the early hours of Sunday 23 February.
