“There’s something about that generation”: Only One Call of Duty Game Has a Mission That Captured the Emotional Toil of America’s Greatest Generation

If you ever wanted to experience how it feels like to kill Nazis during the Second World War, then Call of Duty: World War 2 is just the game for you. The game is one of the most accurate depictions of what World War 2 was like and the story is inspired by real events that occurred during the war.

The title published by Activision has successfully captured the American sentiment with its precise portrayal of the war’s later stages and the campaign effectively showcases the brutality of it to the players. Although being just a game, COD: World War 2 delves deep into how the D-Day was like for the Americans. Let’s find out more.

Call of Duty: World War 2 is the fourteenth installment of the Call of Duty series that was released back in November of 2017. This first-person shooter developed by Sledgehammer Games is centered around a squad in the 1st Infantry Division or 1ID, which is a combined arms division for the United States of America. The game literally takes you to the infamous Omaha Beach and primarily follows the historical events of Operation Overlord, which is also known as D-day.

While few of the gameplay mechanics and the modern arsenal of the previous games were removed in COD: WW2, the plot is the main attraction point of the game. In a 2017 interview between GamesRader and Michael Condrey, the co-founder of Sledgehammer Games, he stated how the developing company wanted to tell a story based on real-life events. He added that the story is not a retelling experience of another person’s life instead, it is the emotional narrative of the soldiers who were present there.

We wanted to tell a story based on real events but unique to us. Our squad is First Infantry, but it’s twelve men and their journey, so it’s very unique and we have a story that interacts with the Bridge Troops and connects into the liberation of Paris, that was unique to telling the story we wanted to tell, and so it was neither trying to tell a recap of somebody else or trying to find the gap – it was really based on this emotional narrative we wanted and there were a lot of people involved. They say something like 600 thousand came through Normandy at some point, right? So there are plenty of stories from infantry to armour to airborne and we had a lot to choose from.

In the same interview, he also added how he found the heroism of the soldiers truly remarkable and he did his best to encapsulate that and present it in the title.

I just find that remarkable, that heroism… there’s something about that generation and their cause that’s so powerful. They say – “I’m no hero but I served in the company of heroes.” I love that sentiment, and it’s something that we tried to capture.

It is safe to say that Sledgehammer Games succeeded in achieving the World War scene in their game and brought it in front of the whole world to see the masterpiece they had created.

The game focuses both on action and authenticity

Although many World War games prioritize the action over accurate representation, Call of Duty: World War 2 delivered both in an equally balanced way. While offering one of the best storylines in all of Call of Duty history, the game also provides you with battle scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Call of Duty: World War 2 not only brought the franchise to its historical roots but also changed the perception of how we see the brutality and heroism of World War 2. Sledgehammer Games made sure that the sacrifices of the soldiers were not just statistics that you read on Wikipedia, but were legends of the soldiers that the players can experience firsthand in the title.
