It comes just months after Sean split from his wife Jody Weintraub, and started dating Julia Stambler, the ex-girlfriend of Charlie Sheen.
Sean is currently housed in the Cliffside Malibu rehabilitation facility – where his friend Scott Disick attended treatment sessions for his own issues.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, an insider said: ‘Sean is in rehab for pill addiction.’
‘He’s had a long history of drug addiction, and he decided to get help when he was that he was falling off the deep end again.’
His family reportedly held an intervention for Sean because they were worried about his condition.
The insider also said that Sir Rod is proud of his son for checking into rehab, and admitting that he needs help to deal with his issues.
The stunning facility looks directly onto the Pacific Ocean, and features an outdoor pool and gym, and treats patients to healthy and organic meals provided by a chef.
Each room is fitted with its own TV set, and yoga, walks, acupuncture, equine therapy, and group counselling are all on offer.
Sean previously told the Daily Mail that his addiction began when he was just 13-years-old.
He revealed that he began drinking while he was a student at Beverly Hills High School, before moving on to more dangerous drugs such as ecstasy and heroin.
In 2012, he said: ‘I would go to parties at that age and drink and smoke cannabis and cigarettes.’
‘It was very easy for me to get drugs.’
I would just walk into a party and someone would hand me them. I hardly ever paid for them.’
He also revealed that he got badly addicted to the psychedelic drug, ecstasy from a very young age.
He then began taking prescription pills, cocaine, and eventually, heroin.
Sean was first sent to Meadows, a famous treatment centre in Arizona, having been badly addicted to drugs at the age of 19.
In 2001, he overdosed, and was jailed for 90 days after pleading no contest to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon on then 19-year old student, Jason Rogland.
