Marvel Boss Says Sony is Why Tom Holland’s Spider-Man Cameo Won’t Happen in Daredevil: Born Again

Spider-Man and Daredevil’s friendship goes back a long way, which makes sense as both superheroes are notable for working at a street level, making their dynamic all the more interesting. In the MCU, we did get a glimpse of it in No Way Home, and with Daredevil: Born Again on the horizon, fans felt their bond would be explored more in the following seasons.

Unfortunately, contrary to the rumors that let us believe that a crossover between them on the small screen was inevitable, according to Marvel TV head, Tom Holland’s cameo is unlikely because of Sony’s clause.

Sony’s stranglehold on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is holding Marvel back

Despite headlining a trilogy, according to Brad Winderbaum, the head of Marvel’s Streaming, Television, and Animation division, Sony’s contract with Marvel likely prohibits Peter’s involvement in TV in terms of live-action. Elaborating on it, the Marvel head added (via Phase Hero):

You know, I’m not sure exactly what the rules are but I think they have longform television rights. We can do 30-minute animation, I think.

If true, it explains why the character has been relegated to What If…? and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on the small screen, and it doesn’t seem Sony has any intentions to allow its inclusion in Born Again. Although Spider-Man 4 could still reunite the duo and explore their dynamic on a street level, considering the film is slated to hit between the two Avengers flicks, a multiversal route is more likely.

Daredevil: Born Again will likely enjoy a long run on the small screen

As for Daredevil: Born Again, which will mark the beginning of a new chapter for MCU on the small screen, per Winderbaum, the show will double down on its traditional approach to TV by getting back to “comfort viewing reliability”. Although he isn’t certain about Born Again‘s total lifespan, the exec assured fans Born Again will be “One-hundred percent… a multi-season show” (via EW), and similar might be the case for upcoming MCU shows.

On the flip side, Charlie Cox, whose current commitment with Marvel only covers the first two seasons, confessed he is unaware of the character’s future past Born Again season 2. But the actor is more than likely on board for a prolonged run, adding (via Deadline):

I have no knowledge of any other commitments at all.It definitely feels like Matt Murdock is in that [Marvel] world more but it would be cool for that journey to continue.

With Sony giving up on its struggling cinematic universe, hopefully, the media giant will eventually lose its stranglehold on the IP.

Daredevil: Born Again will premiere on Disney Plus on 4 March 2025.
