House of the Dragon Season 3 promises many things—from one of the biggest battles in Westeros to new major key players in the Dance of the Dragons—and recently, showrunner Ryan Condal stated they will bring to the screen an iconic magical artifact that we haven’t seen in the fantasy franchise.

He did not reveal what the object is, but it’s worth noting that this item, despite not having a major role in the story, was an ancient relic that could explain some of the biggest mysteries in the saga, such as the Targaryen’s descent into madness.
House of the Dragon will feature a familiar object from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire
Ryan Condal teased fans with what they could expect in the third installment of House of the Dragon during his interview via The Stuff Dreams are Made Of. He notably mentioned that they will bring to life a magical item found in George R.R. Martin’s book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, but hasn’t been featured on television.
We have some very specific things we have to build, and one of them is a very in-world thing that we’ve heard a lot about from the text of the books, but we haven’t really ever seen on screen in a specific way. It’s a smaller detail, it’s not a big thing, but I just thought it was cool.
This statement intrigued many fans, and they have resolved to guess and share their speculations online as to what this object could be. On Reddit, a popular theory suggested that Condal could be talking about the Valyrian glass candles. Sure, candles are of no consequence as they serve only one purpose—to illuminate surroundings. But, these are made from dragonglass or obsidian, and therefore possess supernatural powers.

Glass candles radiate different shades of colors and are also said to have been used as a medium of communication over great distances. On other occasions, this magical item also allows for discreet observation of things occurring around the world, as well as provides people with prophetic visions.
Of course, this is merely a guess and will only be confirmed once the show returns next year. Regardless, it’s very exciting to see Valyrian glass candles in action next season.
Did glass candles cause the Targaryen madness?

The possible inclusion of glass candles in Season 3 also brings new supposition that they could have been the cause of the Targaryen family’s madness and obsession with prophecies as they have the ability to project cryptic visions. It’s also possible that other powerful entities may have been using them to communicate and influence the minds of the previous rulers.
There’s nothing stopping Condal and his team from bringing these glass candles to Season 3, and despite them appearing quite late in the show, they somehow fit perfectly into the narrative. We’ll be meeting new key figures from House Hightower, and it has been said that many glass candles were preserved in the Citadel in Oldtown.
House of the Dragon is currently available to watch on Max.
