Concerned woman warns FDA about harmful fruit ripening practices in Ghanaian markets

A concerned Ghanaian woman has sparked a wave of reactions on social media after raising alarms about potentially harmful fruit ripening practices in some of Ghana’s markets.

In a heartfelt video shared on TikTok on February 20, 2025, user Mrslalas1 voiced her concerns directly to the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), urging them to take swift action to protect consumers.

Her post, which has since garnered over 1.5K shares and hundreds of comments, sheds light on a troubling practice that many shoppers may be unaware of.

“FDA, if you don’t wake up, our mothers selling fruits will eventually kill most Ghanaians with their illegal practices,” she warned in the video.

Mrslalas1 revealed that her own mother sells fruits, giving her firsthand insight into the methods some vendors use.

She recounted a troubling experience where she purchased an avocado from Tema Market, only to find it overly soft the very next day—a result, she claims, of chemical ripening agents.

“They have a medicine that forces fruits to ripen just two hours after application. This will cause health issues for most buyers,” she explained, her voice filled with concern.

She even mentioned confronting her mother about the practice, warning her that she would report her if she ever resorted to using such chemicals.

The emotional plea has sparked widespread discussion online, with many users expressing shock and calling on the FDA to investigate the claims.

Others shared similar experiences, voicing fears about the potential health risks of consuming chemically ripened fruits.

As the video continues to circulate, pressure is mounting on regulatory bodies to address the issue and ensure that food safety standards are upheld in markets across the country.
