Now that Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 Season 2 returned to Paramount+ on Sunday, the lead actors Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren sat for an interview addressing their characters’ fate in the upcoming installment. Therein, during a discussion about Mirren’s character Cara’s correspondence with her nephew, Ford praised Sheridan’s vision of the character.

Hailing the Western drama creator Taylor Sheridan for bringing out raw emotions through his writing and character depictions, Harrison Ford called his female characters “exceptional”. Well, it seems that the MCU star has yet to watch and endure Yellowstone and Landman, wherein Sheridan’s female characters tend to grow progressively unbearable.
Harrison Ford hailed Taylor Sheridan’s depiction of female characters in 1923
Paramount+’s 1923 returned for Season 2 on Sunday and fans seem super excited about it. Well, not just audiences, even the show leads Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren seemed thrilled to bring their characters to life for the second time. Therefore, speaking with TVLine, the duo addressed the future of their characters.
During the discussion, as the topic significantly shifted towards Helen Mirren‘s Cara, and her character’s growth, Harrison Ford offered his opinion on the same. Having nothing but praise for 1923 creator Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the female characters, Ford spoke highly of him and his ability to bring Cara’s deep, emotional connection to the show’s storyline.

Addressing the mounting stress surrounding Cara’s decision to continue writing letters to her nephew despite having no assurance that they were reaching him, Harrison Ford mentioned that it wasn’t just a means of communication but it was her way of processing her emotions. Calling it a journal-like experience, Ford went on to call Taylor Sheridan‘s female characters “extraordinary”.
I think, in a perhaps slightly over-poetic way, I think she does, she needs to do this, and that she’s doing it for herself as much as she’s doing it in the hope that he will come. She’s making sense of this, and she’s looking for a way out of it.
And it’s a spectacular insight into the mind of a woman that [series creator] Taylor Sheridan has imagined… Extraordinary. Helen’s part, all of the other female parts, are filled with passion, and purpose, and tragedy.
Reflecting on how Taylor Sheridan tried portraying Cara’s strength and vulnerability through her futile yet hopeful process of writing letters to her nephew, Harrison Ford praised the creator’s brilliance. Indeed, 1923 and its predecessor 1883 have been praised for their strong, complex female leads. But does this same brilliance carry over to Sheridan’s other works? That’s where things get tricky.
Harrison Ford’s tall praises prove that he’s yet to endure Taylor Sheridan’s other works

While 1923 gives us well-written female characters like Cara Dutton, Taylor Sheridan’s other shows haven’t always received the same praise. Fans of Yellowstone and Landman have often criticized how female roles evolve—or rather, how they become harder to watch as time goes on. And considering how Harrison Ford praised Sheridan, it suggests that he might have yet to watch the other shows.
Take, for example, Beth Dutton from Yellowstone. While she started as a fierce, complicated woman, many viewers later criticized Taylor Sheridan for turning her into overly dramatic and exhausting. Taking to social media, fans had to express their frustration over how the showrunner always leaned towards extremes—either he made the characters too over-the-top or lacked depth.

So this seemingly raised an interesting question—has Harrison Ford actually sat through Yellowstone and Landman? His glowing praise of Taylor Sheridan’s female characters suggests he might not have experienced how frustrating they can become in those other shows. While 1923 may be an exception, it doesn’t necessarily mean Sheridan’s track record is flawless.
1923 is currently available to watch on Paramount+.
